Anyone crafty at web design? because i have ZERO spare time lately (barely time to work on vlogdir).

So, I need someone to create about 3-5 vlog-centric templates for users to choose from.
videobloggers.org is a blogging engine and media manager. So, the front-end can use any templates, just like blogger.com etc... Only prob is, I want to have new, fresh templates that cater to videoblogging... I have a few themes partially finished, but need help desperately. I have to face the fact that a one-man team cant make it all happen.... not in my world. days are too short... or at least my concentration is ;-)

This would be volunteer work, but good for your portfolio.... and you would be contributing to the videoblogging community, which gives you warm fuzzies and shit. Seriosuly though, this is a legit project. It's a front-end to the very respectable ibiblio.org much the same as ourmedia.org/archive.org.
There is no commercial side to this project. It is all about giving back to the community. So, if that gets ya hot, then ping me.

Until now, we've lived on very generous grants from some very wise

Commons is, and where we're going with it. This is something I should

This first email won't have much news to current friends of Creative
Commons. You probably know all this. My aim in this initial missive
is to explain what Creative Commons is, and why we launched it. There
will be some bragging about what we've accomplished so far. Don't
worry, these emails are from me, and not a press department. There
will be plenty of self-criticism later on. For the moment, let's
focus on the positive idea that got CC going.

CC: The Story

Creative Commons was conceived in a conversation I had with Eric
Eldred. I was representing Eric in his case challenging the United
States Congress' Copyright Term Extension Act. Eric was enthusiastic
about the case, but not optimistic about the results. Early on, he
asked me whether there was a way that we could translate the energy
that was building around his case into something positive. Not an
attack on copyright, but a way of using copyright to support, in
effect, the public domain.

I readily agreed, not so much because I had a plan, but because,
naive lawyer that I was, I thought we'd win the case, and Eric would
forget the dream. But nonetheless, long before the Supreme Court
decided to hear Eldred's plea, a bunch of us had put together the
plan to build the Creative Commons.

We stole the basic idea from the Free Software Foundation -- give
away free copyright licenses. Because copyright is property, the law
requires that you get permission before you "use" a copyrighted work,
unless that use is a "fair use." The particular kind of "use" that
requires permission is any use within the reach of the exclusive
rights that copyright grants. In the physical world, these "exclusive
rights" leave lots unregulated by copyright. For example, in the real
world, if you read a book, that's not a "fair use" of the book. It is
an unregulated use of the book, as reading does not produce a copy
(except in the brain, but don't tell the lawyers).

But in cyberspace, there's no way to "use" a work without
simultaneously making a "copy." In principle, and again, subject to
fair use, any use of a work in cyberspace could be said to require
permission first. And it is that feature (or bug, depending upon your
perspective) that was the hook we used to get Creative Commons going.

The idea (again, stolen from the FSF) was to produce copyright
licenses that artists, authors, educators, and researchers could use
to announce to the world the freedoms that they want their creative
work to carry. If the default rule of copyright is "all rights
reserved," the express meaning of a Creative Commons license is that
only "some rights [are] reserved." For example, copyright law gives
the copyright holder the exclusive right to make "copies" of his or
her work. A Creative Commons license could, in effect, announce that
this exclusive right was given to the public.

Which freedoms the licenses offer is determined both by us (deciding
which freedoms are important to secure through CC licenses) and by
the creator who selects from the options we make available on our
website. The basic components have historically been four: (1)
Attribution (meaning the creator requires attribution as a condition
of using his or her creative work), (2) NonCommercial (meaning the
creator allows only noncommercial uses of his or her work), (3) No
Derivatives (meaning the creator asks that the work be used as is,
and not as the basis for something else), and (4) Share Alike
(meaning any derivative you make using the licensed work must also be
released under a Share Alike license).

These four options -- when each is an option -- produce 11 possible
licenses. But when we saw that 98% of our adopters chose the
"attribution" requirement, we decided to drop attribution as an
option. That means we now offer 6 core licenses:

(1) Attribution (use the work however you like, but give me attribution)
(2) Attribution-ShareAlike (use the work however you like, but give
me attribution, and license any derivative under a Share Alike license)
(3) Attribution-NoDerivatives (use the work as is, and give me
attribution)
(4) Attribution-NonCommercial (use the work for noncommercial
purposes, and give me attribution)
(5) Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives (use the work for
noncommercial purposes, as is, and with attribution)
(6) Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (use the work for
noncommercial purposes, give me attribution, and license any
derivative under a ShareAlike license)

(We also offer a couple of other specialty licenses that I'll
describe in a later post).

These options get added to a basic template license. That template
assures that the creator (1) retains his or her copyright, (2)
affirms that any fair use, first sale, or free expression rights are
not affected by the CC license, and (3) so long as the adopter
respects the conditions the creator has imposed, the license gives
anyone in the world four freedoms: (i) to copy the work, (ii) to
distribute the work, (iii) to display or publicly perform the work,
and (iv) to make a digital public performance of the work (i.e.,
webcasting). Finally, the license also requires the adopter to (1)
get permission for any uses outside of those granted, (2) keep any
copyright notices intact, (3) link to the license, (4) not alter the
license terms, and (5) not use technology (i.e., DRM) to restrict a
licensee's rights under the license.

The licenses give creators a simple way to mark their creativity with
the freedoms they want it to carry by default. The license is an
invitation to others to ask for permission for uses beyond those
given by default. A "Noncommercial" license does not mean the creator
would never take money for his or her creativity. It means simply,

Just a quick thought... are you folks up on videoblogging (aka vlogging)? It's blowing up and would be an easy opportunity for a semi self producing documentary. If you've got any sort of digital camera (cellular, still, dv pro, whatever) and the patience to discover software that's already on your XP or OSX computer you can participate. Many of the intersting experiences and insights that are shared here could be made into the simplest of even minute-long clips and shared online for free... if every member of this group made even one such video/vlog the documentary would virtually make itself and be available online. Wanna blow up niche awareness? Blow this thing up P2P... get folks making video of themselves and compile n distro it via bittorrent or rss feed... applied vlogging... hot wetness

I blog this like I might ever use it... can these things be parlayed into psychosocial economies?

"Here they are in no particular order:

1 - A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. I knew about interest rates and such before I went to business school, but the concept of the time value of money and present values were foriegn to me until I got my MBA.

2 - You will make more money if you take more risk. I did not understand that there was an explicit relationship between risk taking and expected return before I went to business school. I do now :)

3 - You can value an asset if you know its cash flows, the timing of them, and can quantify the risks of acheiving those cash flows. The whole area of the capital asset pricing model and modern portfolio theory was my second favorite thing I learned at business school. It made sense to me and given my engineering background, I found the math around these theories fascinating. I don't use the formulas very much any more, but my brain is now hard wired with these theories and I don't think of value any other way and never will.

4 - Markets are made up of speculators and hedgers. You can't have one without the other. Speculators take risk and hedgers reduce risk. You can do some amazing financial magic by mixing and matching these concepts. I loved speculative markets. It was by far my favorite class at business school and it is the one class that I find myself going back to regularly for inspiration.

5 - The best price to sell something isn't always the lowest price. My favorite case study was the champagne producer who couldn't sell his product in the US until he tripled the price. Then his sales went through the roof. Tom Evslin has a post on this topic on his blog today and it was the inspiration for this post."

So I was thinkin'... wouldn't it be cool if you never had to make links in emails and blog posts? Like say... you wanna ref something.. but you don't wanna assume that people know or don't know what you're talking about.. wouldn't it be cool to have some script in your template or mail client that scanned your text for words and phrases that matched a database and made the links for you? (as far as email it'd be similar to the way we use the smileys.. maybe... I'd have to look into that cuz i actually dunno..) this way no matter what you're talking about.. people will know what you're talking about... and it could be totally customizable... from the very thorough exclude-only-what-a-google-search-would method... to maybe checking your text against specific resources and documents... like set up particular sites to reference... and have it sort of understood that the test would in some cases be mostly links and therefore not as obvious... to avoid the eye sore... what about checking your blog/email text against xfolk bookmarks or del.icio.us? you could include news feeds specific scholarly articles... classical literature and lit analysis... whatever... but this way if ever you make a reference to something folks could be up on what your referring to... what of phrases vs words? well.. there could be some sorta java involved that expands the selection with hovering... something like that... or highlight any part of the text and hit "search" and it'll check only against the databases intended by the author... etc... but yeah... the point is this.. you set up a database... prolly thru your del.icio.us account... and or those feeds... etc... and there after anything you include in your blogs and email would be checked against that database and linked appropriately... what of multiples? i dunno... maybe a unique page could be made for that occasion showing the possible meanings... and links them from there...

if you're not impressed this either already exists or I've failed as rambling rambler.. but please ask me to clarify this.. cuz it's a cool idea... i really can't wait to learn programming and be able to write this stuff myself...

COMPLAINT: I ordered a CD Drive and recieved a confirmation email from the vendor. My bank account was charged the appropriate amount. The vendor has provided no means for me to track my order and has failed to respond to several inquiries and complaints alike. The one time I got a person on the phone I was immediately forwarded to a voicemail. The voicemail claims to respond within 48 hours. It has been almost a week. I have had zero dialogical contact with Surplus Computers and am almost persuaded that they do not exist.

I conduct business via my laptop. It has crashed and I need it working
as soon as possible. I need any CD drive to fix it. A refund or
"replacement" (although I never recieved it) are acceptable as long as

lost productivity beyond the monitary value of the drive and delivery
are possible that would be ideal. I am open to an offer.

Eric Rice says "go make media" I say "go be the media". Both are equally important, but often we forget about the second in the vlogosphere. You can make all the media you want in the world but it's ONLY through heavy inter-linking that we can bubble up media, create consensus, promote what we love. Lucas fights this fight because he loves your videos as do I. I don't approve of his calling everyone's apprehension childish, but I VERY much understand his frustration. I hope we can just get over that and focus on what's to be gained. Building consensus through linking is the fundamental premise of the blogosphere. We link to what we love and in so doing promote it. This is how groundswell is created, this is how Trent Lott and Dan Rather toppled. It's not because of bulletin boards, and it's not because of comments on blogs, it's because blogger after blogger linked to each others posts condemning their actions. Like it or not links are the measure by which the blogging world works and we're being very anti-linking. And in fact this is a FUNDAMENTAL premise of the web. Tim Berners Lee himself committed substantial time to the very concept of linking to build consensus in his book Weaving the Web. It was a very hard thing for people to grasp back then and it still is. What? Not charge people to link to my website, my media? It was as foreign to most business people as giving away your product for free. Newspapers got over it and started to get it. There's still some that don't. People linking to you makes YOU more valuable. It's ironically a fundamental premise most of the world still has issue with. Just look at the RIAA, they still can't get it. Yes there are issue such as bandwidth, no you don't have to give it ALL away for free, but you have to put SOME skin in the game. How much is up to you. Hollywood gets it, they put trailers in the game, that's how much skin they put in the game, it's starting to standardize. They've given up on trying to control it through streaming. They're letting their trailers be copied, hot-linked, god knows what. What is the RIAA putting in the games... well, artists are slowly starting to put more skin in the game... whole promotional songs. They're starting to realize 30 second clips are not enough, streaming media is not enough. They don't need to put in every song, or full res songs, but they need to find the balance, and so do we. People like Lucas are building infrastructure to reward and encourage people who put skin in the game. Jib Jab for example put some skin in the game. Perhaps 100 or so hours before the last presidential election. They became overnight celebrities for their "this land is your land parody", and it's because people linked to it like crazy. Within 48 hours the the prime-time news on nearly every channel was showing it, for free. We can't always choose how people link to us, but it IS overwhelmingly a good thing and we can create best practices, we can find practices ourselves to minimize the downside and maximize the upside. That's where our energy should be focused, not this blow by blow which frankly is disturbing and very much counter productive. On a side note, If you like I can perhaps find the audio clip of Tim himself reading on this subject and post it here if you want to hear it yourself. I'm a little concerned about fair use, but it's important stuff. Interlinking is how consensus is built, this is how things bubble up. Citizen journalism doesn't stop after you post a video on the web, in fact it has just begun. You've made media, the next step is for us to all talk about it, link to it, re-vlog it and in so doing become the media, the conduit by which others find out about it, the filters, the trusted sources. If billy bob makes the most brilliant rant in the history of blogging it doesn't matter if we leave 1000 comments. Better that 10 people re-vlog his video then 1000 people comment. Clint posted on this before. We need to seriously reconsider how we communicate in the vlogosphere, because we can literally comment until we're blue in the face or chat here on how excellent each others media is and we will accomplish nothing. Well there are certain internal values to the community, but it does little for the public, to evangelize, to externalize the conversation. In order to fulfill the complete promise of not just "making media" but BEING THE MEDIA, we need to come up with better systems for using inter-linking in our communications process. One of those systems is the link-blog, another is using trackbacks instead of always commenting directly on one's vlog. Andreas doesn't even use comments on solitude.dk. If you want to leave a comment on Andreas's blog you have to blog about a post and the trackback system will pick it up. It's probably because of this that Andreas has a healthy amount of people linking to his blog. This boosts his google rank among other things. It's a little extreme, but it illustrates my point. What I'm proposing is to accept interlinking and start working towards better interlinking and to then encourage interlinking. What I'm proposing is a re-vlogging etiquette. why would i wanna do that? it's a means to totally open source video collaboration via tag. Streaming by tags (of varying specificity) would afford people the ability to group rough edit, cast, and direct.

Assume you had a forum/wiki/blog/some location for the textual stage of video production... in that wiki you have some scripts and maybe some folks link to pics for storyboarding (maybe they're the same folks that write the scripts... maybe not)... Then assume you have a class of video folks.. drawing from the scripts and storyboards... and vlogging their contributions to the whole video production. Then a class of folks come along and make some editing/casting/directing-type decisions and bookmark the clips (hotlink, unless someone tells me why not..which im open to) they feel best suit the piece and tag them with the title and some sort of general editing notation. As this axiom is set in motion viewers/editors can subscribe to the feeds for those tags and either watch the raw self edited piece or take those clips and arrange/edit/refine them as they see fit... post them themselves... lather rinse repeat... collaborative video

In this conversation between Jay Dedman and the folks at Communication Strategies some points were raised that I had to weigh in on. Vlogging's got a ways to go, but it's not not-awesome... by any stretch...

There's a lot to be said for this point of view. I think at it's heart is a progressive sentiment. That's a good thing. These are all considerations we have to face as this unfolds. I'd like to cite MySpace.com again... it provides nothing new as far as the vastness fo cyberspace is concerned but what it does achieve is a cetain mass accessability. Videoblogging was awesome before it took on the name, it's awesome now, and it's got potential to be even... dare I say it... extra awesome.
Something to really consider though is the one-person band approach many vloggers seem to take vs the specialized team effort mainstream media production employs. Friends, this is the internet, it IS a specialized team. As pro-sumer technologies in this field flourish and accessible services like MySpace.com continue to make it easy for anyone to be empowered here.. imagine what hourdes of empowered specialized niche individuals will be able to accomplish in unison!

That's what THIS is all about.

So, hail to the heroes and hail to the future. It wouldn't be progressive if we were already satisfied.
Not to mention... if nothing else... mainstream types see what's going on. It'll be the same stuff soon enough... one way or another...

I could really go for some sweet corn about now.

War on Language?

If it hasn't already, couldn't it be said that the RIAA et al and their war on file sharing as well as many provisions of the copyright and trademark laws are headed toward a war on language?

If these ideas of private property extending into the infosphere are followed through to the furthest extent how big of a bite will it take out of free speech?

Hypothetically, would we arrive at being permitted to say only new things? With new words? Kinda sucks for language as an institution... What of the languages of film and the languages of music? Even the language of gaming?

We need a bureau to protect and define new media languages to help clarify what policies and behaviors are healthy and responsible in sustaining human evolution.

Lord God I thank you for this moment.. for this peace... for this understanding... I Love you... Lord God I'm thrilled to my core that you took me back.. helped me to remember all you have done for me.. I thank you Lord God so much for opportunity, technology, this moment, and this Life.

In prayer this morning I remembered a few things that I'd like to share. Salvation is as simple as realization. God loved us first and we just have to receive it and know we are perfect pure innocent children of the Lord. We are forgiven. We are free to make right decisions not because we hope to gain favor but because we already have the favor, the love, and the strength to do so. As a state of mind Holiness, Purity, and Salvation are the launch pad from which we do right, because we believe it, because we know redemption is a fact. It is not the other way around that we should behave in order to be saved. The result is the same. We're still living rightly. But, the difference is that when we realize our Holiness first, we make decisions from a place of strength, faith, confidence, and alignment with the mind of God, righteousness. When we live to gain Holiness, even if we make the same decisions, we are coming from a mind of lack, doubt, fear, guilt and impurities that show us not as the innocent children God created us to be. It is not our actions that save us. It is our faith. In a faithful life, in a mind of strength and abundance, right actions and right decisions flow freely. Jesus simplified the 10 Commandments into 2: Love God and Love each other. To Love God is to trust God and have faith in the truth of our redemption, our strength, our freedom, our purity, our abundance, and to realize that fear, doubt, guilt, and unforgiveness are illusions. From that mind, Loving each other (and ourselves as peers) is simple.
